Analysis of Julie and Julia

                                         Julie & Julia - Wikipedia

In this post I will be analysis the movie Julie and Julia a 2009 Pg-13 drama/comedy drama which revolves around two real live womans stories. The movie starts off by introducing Julie who is one of the main characters in the movie. and by setting the setting. This is shown using props, sound, close ups, mid shots, a shallow depth of focus, wide shots dissolves. The is also done using the shooting location. The use of the shooting location and sound make the setting seem more realistic. The use of the shooting location made it seem as if the movie was filmed in Paris rather than in New York. This was done by showing shoots of places in New York that looked like what people expect Paris to look like. The use of sound helps to convince the audience that Julie is in Paris France by having the main character speak French during the opening scene. The use of mid shots and a shallow depth of focus helps to keep the focus on Julia and to characterize Julie as a happy, joyful and caring women. The use of mid shots helps to show Julia’s reaction to traveling and to hanging out with her husband and also helps to establish Julie as an important character. Throughout the first two minutes of Julie traveling and hangout with her husband she is always shown smiling and laughing. This helps to show that she is a loving, happy, joyful and caring women. This also helps to emphasize the importance of Julie as a main character since the beginning focuses on Julie and her reactions. The use of close ups on food helps to emphasize that the focus of the movie is on food. The use of close ups on Julia's hands on the other hand helps to emphasize that the movie is also about Julie’s love for food.

Analysis of The Way, Way Back

The Way, Way Back - Wikipedia

In this post I will be talking about the pg-13 2003 comedy drama "The Way,Way Back . "The Way Way Back" starts off by introducing the main character and his family. It also helped to establish the relationship between the main character and his mom's boyfriend. This is show using fast motion, fade in, rack focus, extreme close up, mid shots, shallow depth of focus and over the shoulder shot. The use of a shallow depth of focus and extreme close ups and mid shots help to keep the focus on the conversation taking place in the car between the main character (Duncan and his mother’s boyfriend. It also helps to create an idea of the relationship between Duncan and his mother’s boyfriend (Trent). It also establishes Duncan as a main character. The extreme close ups of Trent helps to keep the focus on the main character while establishing the relationship between Trent and Duncan. They both dislike each other for many reasons. Trent does not like the way Duncan is and Duncan does not like his because he sees him as disrespectful. He is someone who ever since he came into their lives has made Duncan miserable. The shallow depth of focus and mid shots of Duncan helps to emphasize the importance of Duncan as a main character and keeps the focus on the conversation taking place The mid shots of Duncan versus the extreme close ups of Trent helps to emphasize that Duncan is a more important character than Trent. He is the most important character out of all the characters. The use of a shallow depth of focus helps to keep the focus on the conversion. This helps to emphasize the importance of this interaction to the relationship between the characters. This is where their relationship starts going downhill at a rapid rate. Their relationship gets worse as the movie progresses. The use of fast motion and fade in helps to the audience to get an idea of the fact that the characters are traveling and get an idea of Trent and Duncan’s relationship before we meet them. It also helps to get an idea of what they are passing during their travels. The use of fast motion helps the audience to get an idea of the fact that the people are traveling and what they are passing during their travels. This establishment of the land helps the audience not to be confused when they do see the characters and the setting. The use of a fade in allows the establishment of a relationship between the characters before we meet them. This also helps the audience not to be confused when entering the scene. They already know that they scene will be tense between the character and emphasize their bad relationship.

Analyzing the beginning of comedy dramas actually done

In these next couple posts I will be analyzing several movie opening and talking about where and when these movies were filmed.

In this post I will be analyzing the first two minutes of Crazy Rich Asians which is a 2018 drama /comedy drama rated pg-13. The movie starts by establishing the personality of Nick Young’s mom Eleanor Young. It also helps to establish Eleanor Young and her family as an important part of the movie This shown by the use of mid shots, low key lighting, rack focus and a tracking shot. The use of a tracking shot at the very beginning of the clip as the Young family arrives at the hotel helps to establish them as important characters in this movie. It is important that they are seen entering the hotel by the audienceThey bring about an important aspect of the scenes taking place in this location. The use of mid shots and low key lightning help to keep the focus on Mrs. Young and her family’s reaction to the current situation unfolding. This helps to build an idea of the personality of  Mrs.Young. She never backs downs during the whole scene. She stands confident and endures the rudeness. The use of low-key lighting in the scene makes the background of this seen not pop out there for not drawing any attention away from the scene taking place. The setting and props in this seen also help to keep the attention on the scene unfolding by position props that make sense to the scene but do nooverally stand outThe use of rack focus between the hotel employees and Mrs. Young helps to show both the people of the hotel’s reaction to the situation and Mrs. Young’s reaction. This helps the audience to get an idea of the overall relationship between Mrs. Young and the people of the hotel. This also to develop the personality of Mrs. Young. She keeps a calm demeanor throughout the scene while the hotel manager gets upset. This shows a seriousness and calmness about Mrs. Young. This is prevalent throughout the movie since even though she thinks Rachel Chu is not worth of her son she does not react loudly

Genre conventions part 3 actually done

In this blog, I will be talking about the stars of this genre. I will also be talking about the intended audience for movies that are comedy dramas. There are a lot of actors which have played in comedy drama, but here are very few famous actors that act specifically in comedy dramas. Most actors are famous for their roles in movies that are either a comedy or a drama. Some of those actors include Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ian McKeller. Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy are actors famous for their roles in many comedies. Adam Sandler has starred in comedies such as “Grown Ups” and “Just Go With It”. Eddie Murphy has started in comedies such as “Dolemite Is My Name” and “Daddy Day Care”. Ian McKeller and Leonard Di Caprio are famous for their roles in dramas. Steve Martin has starred in movies such as “Cheaper by the Dozen” and “Novocaine”. Leonard Di Caprio has stared in movies such as “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Departed”. Most movies in the genre comedy drama are rated PG 13 or R. This shows that the comedy drama genre is intended towards teens, young adults and adults. It is also this because some of the movies deal with mature relationships and mature topics. These groups typically can handle the explicit content and enjoy it. They are also the group most likely to see trailers for this type of movie because they watch mature tv shows on tv and use the latest app. This makes it easy to market to this type of audience. These groups are also typical movie goers who are likely to see the commercials during a mature movie that they watch. They are also the group that can afford to pay for going to the movies and can dictate how they spend their money.

Genre conventions part 2 actually done

In this blog I will be talking about common themes, story formula of the genre comedy drama. Most comedy dramas start with a big event/ events happening or some huge life change/changes. For example, in both the “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “Marriage Story” the husband and wife are getting a divorce. They are going to have to try to live their lives without each other. They must stand alone in the world. Another example in the movie “50/50”, the main character discovers he has cancer and has only a fifty percent chance of survival. This means now the main character must live with the fact that he might have a limited amount of time to live. Comedy dramas usually result in the main character learning a lesson. For example, in “50/ 50” the character learns to love life to the fullest. He learns you must treat every day like you will not see tomorrow. This lesson is usually learned through mistakes the character made before they realized they needed to change. The character sometimes mops and does nothing because they are grieving their current situation, or they decide to do something crazy. They usually end up doing this in order to escape how they feel, or they think it will make their situation better. This mistake / mistakes usually have a comical result. In other words, the main character ends up in a crazy, hilarious situation because of their mistake. This provides comical relief from the situation taking place in the movie which is what makes the movie not just a drama but a comedy. This teaches them the lesson they need to learn. They realize that they can’t just do something crazy or grieve and expect things to get better. They must take initiative in their life. They must still live despite everything going on, but the way they go about it often creates the comedy. Sources:

Genre conventions part 1 actually done

In these next couple posts I will be talking about the different conventions of the comedy drama genre. These include common character types, theme, setting, story formulas and stars.

In this post I will be talking about common character types and setting found in comedy drama. There are many different characters found in comedy dramas; however, there are certain character types which people associated with this genre. The common character types found in film in general are found here as an extreme version of common stereotypes of certain groups of people. For example, in the genre comedy drama, parents found in this type of movie typically follow one of three stereotypes. They are either controlling parents who want to control their kid's whole life and never let them do anything or they are immature and do not care about their kids. The third stereotype being the oblivious parents. In the movie “The Way, Way Back”, the mom of the main character is caring but oblivious to the fact that her son does not like the person she is dating or that her boyfriend is being mean to her son. Another common character type is the supportive father figure and the rich man. The rich men found in the comedy drama genre typically follow one stereotypes. They are either the rich man who does not care about their relationship at the beginning of the movie. For example, in the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love the main character does not seem to care much about the fact that he and his wife’s relationship is strained rather that he is getting divorced.

There are many different settings in which take comedy dramas take place; however, they typically take place in one of two places. They either take place in the area the character lives or at a place which the character is completely unfamiliar with. For example, in the movie “Crazy Rich Asians” the main character (Rachel Chu) who has lived in New York her whole life goes to visit her boyfriend’s family in Singapore. This means that Rachel Chu was taken to a place where she did not fully understand the costumes and was unfamiliar with the place. She also did not know what to expect from her boyfriend’s family since she had never met them, only heard about them. Another example, in the movie “Crazy, Stupid, Love” the character goes about their daily lives while dealing with the fact that they are getting a divorce.
